Anyone looking to rent an aerial work platform will come across different names for the same equipment, depending on the industry and region. What matters for your choice is not the name but the machine type – even so, it helps to know how the terms fit together:

• Aerial work platform is the umbrella term for all mobile lifting equipment that safely raises people and materials to height.
• Mobile elevating work platform is the term used in the standards. SN EN 280 refers to mobile elevating work platforms, known internationally as MEWPs.
• Cherry picker is the expression commonly used in the trades, by municipalities and by utility companies – it usually refers to truck-mounted platforms and telescopic boom lifts with long reach.
• Picker is the shortened form of cherry picker and is used synonymously on everyday job sites.
• Vehicle lift is also heard colloquially. In technical usage, however, it denotes the stationary lift in a vehicle workshop – in other words, precisely not the powered access equipment covered here. When renting out aerial work platforms, we distinguish by machine type: scissor lifts for vertical lifting with a large platform, articulating boom lifts for working over obstacles, telescopic boom lifts for maximum reach, plus mast lifts, spider lifts and truck-mounted platforms for special cases. Which type suits your job depends on working height, side reach, load capacity and ground conditions.

Anyone who wants to rent a cherry picker almost always means a machine with long reach: high up, far across, often at changing locations. The right configuration comes down to three questions – how often the location changes, what the ground can bear and whether obstacles are in the way.

Truck-mounted platforms are the classic cherry picker on a truck chassis. They drive themselves between locations, are set up on their outriggers in minutes and need no separate transport. This pays off as soon as several locations are served in one day – typical for street lighting, cable networks, advertising structures and municipal maintenance.

Articulating boom lifts are the cherry picker for anything that cannot be reached freely from below. The articulated boom guides the basket over pipework, canopies or machinery. Available with electric, diesel and hybrid drive up to more than 48 m working height.

Telescopic boom lifts deliver the greatest straight reach. Where height and outreach count and the path to the work point is clear, they are the fastest and most stable solution – with us up to 57 m working height.

Spider lifts are the cherry picker for sensitive ground. Low dead weight, variable outriggers and a narrow chassis that fits through standard doors – in demand on parquet, tiles, green spaces and in heritage conservation.

What does it cost to rent a cherry picker?

The rate follows the same factors as for any aerial work platform: configuration, working height, side reach, drive and rental period. Two particularities apply to cherry pickers. First, truck-mounted versions need no machine transport, but they do require a driving licence of the appropriate category. Second, side outreach shifts the permissible basket load – two machines with the same working height can differ greatly in how they can be used in practice.

1. Can the work point be reached freely from below? Yes – then a scissor lift is sufficient; it lifts purely vertically and offers the largest platform. No, pipework, canopies or machinery are in the way – then you need the articulated boom of an articulating boom lift.

2. How far do you need to reach sideways? If straight reach at great height is what counts, the telescopic boom lift is the fastest and most stable solution. If the basket has to be offset sideways and guided around corners, the articulating boom lift remains the choice.

3. What can the ground bear? Sensitive floors, parquet, tiles or green spaces call for a spider lift with low dead weight and variable outriggers. On smooth hall floors, electric machines with non-marking tyres do the job; on building shells and rough terrain, diesel four-wheel-drive versions.

4. Does the location change several times a day? Then a truck-mounted platform drives itself between locations, and separate transport is not needed. If the machine stays in one place for days, a self-propelled platform is usually more economical.

5. How tight is the access? If doors, gates or lifts have to be passed, narrow-track models from 0.76 m overall width come into question – or a mast lift, which is light, narrow and quick to set up.

A tip from practice: the working height is around two metres above the platform height. So if you work at a height of 12 m, you need a machine with a platform height of 10 m. Also add up people, tools and materials – with two fitters and their tools, 350 to 450 kg is realistic.

What determines the rental price

• Machine type and working height: A compact electric scissor lift for 8 m indoor work is in a completely different class from a telescopic boom lift with 57 m working height. Within a machine type, the rate rises with working height, reach and load capacity.
• Drive: Electric, diesel and hybrid machines differ in purchase and maintenance costs – and therefore in rental price. Rough-terrain four-wheel-drive machines are priced above comparable indoor units.
• Rental period: Daily, weekly and monthly rates are staggered. The longer the term, the lower the effective daily rate. From several months onwards, long-term rental with its own conditions is usually the more economical option.
• Transport: Delivery and collection are shown separately from the equipment rental. They depend on the distance from our Passau location, the transport weight and the accessibility of the site.
• Additional services: Machinery breakdown insurance, attachments and on-site instruction are calculated separately.
