Telehandler Attachments – The Quick-Coupler System as an Investment Multiplier

A telehandler without attachments is a lifting machine. With the right range of attachments, it becomes a crane, an aerial work platform, an excavator, a shovel and a cleaning machine – all on the same chassis, within the same working day. The hydraulic quick-coupler is not merely an accessory but a system architecture: it determines how many specialised machines a single telehandler can replace in the fleet.

Technical Operating Principle

The hydraulic quick-coupler sits at the head of the boom. Two hydraulic cylinders clamp a locking contour that engages the standardised mount of every compatible attachment. Attachments can be changed without leaving the cab, without tools, in under 60 seconds. Hydraulic connections couple automatically on locking; electrical connectors for scales or controls do too.

CE Conformity of the Combination: The Overlooked Legal Point

This is where the most common compliance mistake in telehandler operation occurs: CE conformity must apply not only to the carrier machine and not only to the attachment – but to the combination of both. The Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC treats the carrier machine and the attachment as a single overall machine as soon as they operate together.

Consequences for the buyer:

• Attachments from third-party manufacturers without manufacturer approval for the specific carrier machine can void the CE conformity of the overall system

• Inspection under VUV Art. 32b and EKAS Guideline 6512 covers all attachments in use; unlisted attachments will be flagged

• In the event of damage, the operator bears liability if non-approved combinations were used

Pallet Forks – Basic Equipment

Standard version with fixed fork width for Euro pallets (800 × 1,200 mm). Decisive at the point of purchase: the remaining load capacity after deducting the attachment's own weight. A 4-tonne fork itself weighs 180 – 320 kg; this weight is deducted from the carrier machine's load chart.

Variants:

Hydraulic fork positioner: Fork width infinitely adjustable from the cab; essential for changing pallet formats and industrial applications

Wide forks: For oversized loads such as formwork elements, steel beams, pipe bundles

Side shifter: Horizontal displacement of the load without moving the machine; precision positioning in warehouses and during assembly work

Lifting Hook and Winch – the Crane Function

A lifting hook with a freely suspended load turns the telehandler into a lifting appliance under VUV. A winch is additionally available for controlled lowering and lifting out of pits or shafts.

Technical requirements for operation:

Load attachment via lifting accessories (chains, round slings) in accordance with VUV / SUVA guidelines (incl. EKAS)

A freely suspended load must not be moved – the machine must remain stationary

Winch attachments require their own inspection under VUV in addition to the telehandler inspection

Work Platform – MEWP Function with 360° Slew

The work platform, CE-approved to EN 280, turns the telehandler into an aerial work platform. Load capacity typically 200 – 350 kg (1–2 people plus tools). On the roto telehandler, the platform rotates with the upper carriage – full 360° positioning without repositioning the machine.

Critical legal point: For operation with a personnel platform, the requirements of EN 280 apply in full – including the obligation for an annual inspection under VUV as a MEWP, operator training to ISO 18878, and operating instructions for personnel lifting. The operator must explicitly reflect this in their risk assessment under ArGV 3.

Bucket – Earthmoving and Material Handling

Tipping bucket (standard): For sand, gravel, soil, building rubble; volume 0.3 – 1.2 m³ depending on model

High-tip bucket: Discharges over obstacles and into high-sided containers; discharge height up to 3.5 m above ground

Grab/grapple bucket: For lumpy material such as stones, tree stumps, demolition debris; hydraulically closing

Bucket with integrated weighing technology: For recycling, landfill sites and bulk-material intake requiring billing accuracy

Concrete Skip and Mortar Tub

For concreting on hard-to-reach ceiling areas and in shaft structures. Capacity 0.3 – 1.5 m³. Discharge via a slide valve, controlled from the cab or by pull cord. An alternative to a stationary crane for small quantities and frequent repositioning.

Clamp Forks and Pipe Grab

For cylindrical loads: concrete pipes, steel pipes, tree trunks, coils. Hydraulically closing clamping jaws; the load hangs in the clamp without lifting accessories. Advantage over a lifting hook: no rigger required, faster handling, more precise positioning.

Sweeper and Snow Clearing

Sweeper attachments with a hydraulically driven brush unit for construction site access roads, yards and open areas. Working width 1.5 – 2.5 m. A snow-clearing blade serves as the winter-operation counterpart.

Telehandlers with a complete, manufacturer-compliant set of attachments achieve 15 – 25% higher resale prices on the used-equipment market than individual machines without accessories. The reason: the buyer takes over a ready-to-use system with documented CE conformity – and does not need to source additional attachments or check compatibility.

For depreciation planning this means: attachments can be capitalised as independent assets and are depreciated separately from the carrier machine (per the applicable depreciation schedule: tools and fixtures, 5 years straight-line). At the point of sale, they increase the residual value of the overall package disproportionately.
