Trailer-Mounted Work Platform: Use, Driving Licence and Limits
Short answer: what is a trailer-mounted work platform?
The trailer-mounted work platform is the most economical way to reach double-digit working heights: it is towed by a standard towing vehicle and needs neither a truck nor a low-loader. In return, it works exclusively on outriggers and cannot be driven while elevated.
Technically, it is an aerial work platform on a car-trailer chassis. On site it is levelled on four outriggers; only then can the articulated or telescopic boom with the basket be extended. Common rental models reach 10 to 16 metres of working height with basket loads of around 200 kg and dead weights mostly under 2 tonnes — light enough for many towing vehicles.
This guide answers the most frequent questions, above all the one about the driving licence, and shows when a different platform is the better choice.
Which driving licence do I need for towing?
The required driving licence (Fuehrerausweis) depends on the total weight of the combination of towing vehicle and trailer:
| Configuration | Required category |
|---|---|
| Trailer up to 750 kg total weight | B |
| Trailer over 750 kg, combination up to 3,500 kg | B |
| Combination over 3,500 kg gross combination weight | BE |
| Combination up to 7,000 kg, trailer max. 3,500 kg | BE |
Since many trailer platforms weigh 1,500–2,000 kg, category B is only sufficient with a correspondingly light towing vehicle — in practice, category BE is often required. Before renting, check the total weight of the trailer as well as the towing capacity and nose weight of your towing vehicle; both are stated in the vehicle registration document (Fahrzeugausweis). If in doubt, we will give you the data of the specific rental platform in advance — or deliver it straight to the site, in which case the driving licence question does not arise at all.
Applications: where the trailer platform pays off
Tree care and landscaping
The classic: quickly moved between several trees or properties, no truck driver needed, low rental costs.
Roof and facade work
Gutter cleaning, repairs and painting on residential and commercial buildings up to around four storeys — wherever there is a level, load-bearing set-up area next to the building.
Building services and maintenance
Lighting, cameras, small installation jobs: the trailer platform can stay on site for days at low cost without tying up a self-propelled machine.
Limits of the trailer platform — an honest look
- No driving in working position. Every new position means lowering, retracting the outriggers, repositioning and levelling again. With many position changes per day, a self-propelled platform is faster — the comparison articulating boom or scissor lift puts the alternatives into perspective.
- Set-up area required. The four outriggers need level, load-bearing ground with room for the full outrigger spread.
- Sensitivity to wind. As with all light platforms, strict wind limits apply; the figure in the operating manual of the respective machine is decisive.
- Limited basket load. Around 200 kg usually means one or two people with light tools. For material at height, the truck-mounted work platform or the scissor lift is the better choice.
- Height ends sooner. Above 16 metres, self-propelled and truck-mounted platforms take over.
Set-up and safe outrigging step by step
- Check the set-up area: level, load-bearing, no manholes, ducts or edge zones of excavations.
- Align and secure the trailer, place base plates under the outriggers — mandatory on soft ground.
- Extend the outriggers until the wheels are relieved of load; level using the spirit level or automatic levelling.
- Function test and visual inspection before the first lift — part of the daily check by the operator.
- Secure the working area; in public traffic areas with the required traffic police permit under the SVG and SSV.
Operation and qualification
Trailer platforms are no exception: operators require training in accordance with the VUV from external, recognised training providers as well as written authorisation from the employer. What this involves is explained in the guide work platform operator licence.
In addition, Luibl provides a machine-specific briefing at handover — it supplements the training but does not replace it.
Rent or buy a trailer platform?
Used trailer platforms are available at comparatively low prices — but buying only pays off with regular utilisation, because the inspection under VUV, maintenance and the periodic vehicle inspection (MFK) of the trailer continue to apply. For project-based use, renting remains more economical: an inspected machine, no capital tied up and, if needed, the next height up.
For context: trailer platforms are among the most affordable platform types of all. The current guide price ranges are listed in the cost guide.

Trailer platform, tracked platform or truck-mounted platform?
In practice, the trailer platform competes with two other designs. This quick comparison helps with pre-selection:
| Criterion | Trailer platform | Tracked platform | Truck-mounted work platform |
|---|---|---|---|
| Working height | 10–16 m | up to 40 m | 16–57 m |
| Getting to site | towed by vehicle | by van or trailer | on its own axle |
| Ground | level and load-bearing | also soft, narrow, sloping | paved |
| Driving in working position | no | no | no |
| Position changes per day | few | few | many |
| Entry costs | lowest | high | medium to high |
Rule of thumb: one or two locations a day and a towing vehicle available — trailer platform. Narrow passages, inner courtyards or sensitive ground — tracked platform. Constantly changing locations on the road — truck-mounted work platform.
Towing vehicle, manoeuvring and set-up area
Three points decide whether the job runs smoothly — and they are regularly only checked on site, when it is too late.
The towing vehicle must match on paper. What counts are the (braked) towing capacity and the nose weight according to the vehicle registration document (Fahrzeugausweis). A van with a braked towing capacity of 2,000 kg can tow an 1,800 kg platform, an estate car with 1,200 kg cannot. The nose weight additionally determines whether the drawbar load is within permissible limits at all.
Manoeuvring needs space or a mover. Many trailer platforms have an electric mover that allows the trailer to be moved through gateways and around corners without a towing vehicle. On tightly cut properties, this is the difference between two minutes and half an hour.
The set-up area must bear the outrigger forces. Under the outriggers, the entire load is concentrated on four small areas. Manhole covers, light wells, freshly backfilled trenches and paving over cavities are typical weak points. Outrigger pads increase the load distribution area and are always required on soft or unknown ground.
Inspection duties, wind and documentation
Trailer platforms are subject to the same operator obligations as any other aerial work platform:
- Daily check by the operator before first use: visual and functional check of controls, emergency stop, emergency lowering, outriggers and basket safety devices.
- Recurring inspection at least annually by a competent person, documented in the inspection log. For rental machines, the rental company supplies the inspected machine — the records belong to the equipment and should be available at handover.
- Hazard assessment for the specific job by the employer, including a rescue plan: who gets a person out of the basket if the operator becomes incapacitated at height? Emergency lowering must be operable from the ground and its handling practised beforehand.
- Observe wind limits. They are model-specific, stated in the operating manual and apply to the wind speed at working height, not at ground level — in open terrain and between buildings these can be significantly different values.
For work in public traffic areas, traffic safety measures and, where applicable, a traffic police permit are also required; both belong in the planning before renting.
Frequently asked questions
Which driving licence do you need for a trailer-mounted work platform?
For towing, depending on the total weight of the combination, category B or BE. With typical platform weights of 1.5–2 t, category BE is usually required. For operation, the training obligation under VUV also applies.
How high does a trailer-mounted work platform reach?
Common rental models reach 10 to 16 metres of working height. Above that, self-propelled platforms and truck-mounted work platforms take over.
Can a trailer platform be towed by a car?
Yes, provided the car's towing capacity and nose weight are sufficient and the driving licence matches the total weight of the combination. Alternatively, we deliver the platform directly to the site.
How much does it cost to rent a trailer-mounted work platform?
It is one of the most affordable platform types. Current guide price ranges by height and rental period are listed in the cost guide.
Who is allowed to operate a trailer-mounted work platform?
Persons with training in accordance with the VUV from an external, recognised provider and with written authorisation from the employer.
