Maintenance work in a high-bay warehouse always comes up against the same problem: the racking is tall, the aisles are narrow, and warehouse operations are meant to carry on as normally as possible in the meantime. The two main solutions at a glance
For racking maintenance, stocktaking or changing light fittings at heights up to around 12.65 m, the mast lift is the most compact solution. Decision criteria: which platform suits which task
Working height is the first and most important filter: up to around 12 m, a mast lift is usually sufficient; for the topmost levels of modern high-bay racking systems above 18 m, the high-bay scissor lift is the right choice. Both machine types are designed for narrow aisles, but the exact aisle width ultimately determines the specific model – so it is worth checking the actual width in the warehouse rather than estimating from racking height alone. It also matters whether the machine needs to be driven while extended: certain high-bay scissor lifts can do this, which saves considerable time during stocktaking across multiple racking bays, and should be specified when making the enquiry. The floor covering – industrial parquet, epoxy resin or sensitive coatings – calls for non-marking tyres, which are standard on both machine types in the Luibl fleet. And because warehouse operations usually continue as normal during maintenance, the electric drive is almost always the obvious choice: quiet, odour-free, with no exhaust fumes in an enclosed hall.
Typical use cases and what should be clarified before deployment
In everyday practice, both platform types are mainly used for the annual stocktake on the upper racking levels, for sprinkler installation and sprinkler maintenance beneath the hall ceiling, for changing lighting above aisles and racking rows, for repairing damaged racking bays after forklift collision damage, for cable and conduit runs along the hall ceiling, and for converting or extending racking systems during ongoing operations.
For the chosen machine to actually fit on the day of deployment, more than just the racking height should be confirmed in advance. The exact aisle width determines whether the model fits through at all, while ceiling height and obstacles such as sprinkler pipes, ventilation ducts or cable trays often reduce the usable working height more than initially assumed. The floor covering should be stated with the enquiry so that the right tyres are supplied from the outset, and because maintenance work during regular picking operations usually requires closing off the aisle, a clear agreement on the time window is worthwhile. If the machine runs across multiple shifts, battery charging times should also be factored in.
Safety in the high-bay warehouse
Because forklift and pedestrian traffic in a high-bay warehouse almost always continue in parallel, the aisle in use must be cordoned off during operation so that no one crosses paths. Personal fall-protection equipment is mandatory on the platform itself, and every operator must be instructed in accordance with VUV before their first deployment.
